Course overview
艮 (Gèn), one of the eight primary trigrams in the Yi Jing (I Ching), symbolizes mountains, stillness, and reflection. Its structure—two unbroken yang lines below a broken yin line (☶)—represents stability at the base with yielding calmness at the top, capturing the essence of a mountain’s immovable strength and its tranquil peak.

Mountains embody a sense of quiet power, standing firm against the elements while offering a space for contemplation and introspection.
In addition to Dao talks, scriptural work, mystical study (玄学 xuan xue) and meditation, this year’s monthly Daoist training will focus on the Book of Changes (一经 Yi Jing).

The Yi Jing, or Book of Changes, is a revered Chinese divination text that offers wisdom bridging spiritual, philosophical, and practical realms through its eight symbolic trigrams. By exploring the teachings of the Yi Jing, seekers can harness ancient wisdom for personal growth, decision-making, and spiritual enrichment.

☶ 艮 (Gèn): The Stillness of the Mountain

艮 (Gèn), one of the eight primary trigrams in the Yi Jing (I Ching), symbolizes mountains, stillness, and reflection.

Its structure—two broken yin lines below an unbroken yang line (☶)—represents stability at the base with yielding calmness at the top, capturing the essence of a mountain’s immovable strength and its tranquil peak. The lines also suggest the mighty reach of a mountain — earth upon earth (Yin) until the sky (Yang) is reached.

Gèn embodies the power of stillness, the wisdom of boundaries, and the necessity of reflection in a constantly moving world.

Mountains embody a sense of quiet power, standing firm against the elements while offering a space for contemplation and introspection. Gèn represents the qualities of stillness, patience, and self-discipline. It encourages individuals to pause, reflect, and ground themselves amidst the constant movement of life.

It teaches the importance of knowing when to stop and when to act. Just as a mountain is immovable yet enduring, Gèn reminds us that strength often lies in stillness. This aligns with Daoist principles of harmony, where stillness fosters clarity and connection to the natural flow of the universe.

Stillness, as represented by Gèn, is not inactivity. It is purposeful rest—a chance to gather strength, gain clarity, and align oneself with the flow of the Dao. This stillness allows for self-awareness and the cultivation of inner peace, which are essential for navigating life’s challenges.

By embracing Gèn’s wisdom, we can find balance, stability, and clarity, allowing us to move forward with renewed strength and purpose.
