Course overview
兌 (Duì), one of the eight trigrams in the Yi Jing (I Ching), symbolizes the lake, representing joy, openness, and communication.

Its structure—a broken yin line above two unbroken yang lines—reflects a harmonious balance of receptivity and strength, embodying the spirit of gentle expression and shared happiness.

By embodying Duì’s wisdom, we can create harmony in our lives, ensuring that our happiness is rooted in meaningful connections and shared experiences.
In addition to Dao talks, scriptural work, and meditation, this year’s monthly Daoist training will focus on the Book of Changes (一经 Yi Jing).

The Yi Jing, or Book of Changes, is a revered Chinese divination text that offers wisdom bridging spiritual, philosophical, and practical realms through its eight symbolic trigrams. By exploring the teachings of the Yi Jing, seekers can harness ancient wisdom for personal growth, decision-making, and spiritual enrichment.

☱ 兌 (Duì): The Joy of the Lake

☱ 兌 (Duì), one of the eight trigrams in the Yi Jing (I Ching), symbolizes the lake, representing joy, openness, and communication.

Its structure—a broken yin line above two unbroken yang lines—reflects a harmonious balance of receptivity and strength, embodying the spirit of gentle expression and shared happiness. The broken yin line at the top represents receptivity and yielding, while the two solid yang lines below signify strength and stability. Together, they express the idea that true joy is built on a foundation of strength, tempered by flexibility and openness.

Duì embodies the serene yet dynamic energy of a lake, which reflects its surroundings while nourishing life with its depths.

Their calm surfaces reflect the beauty of the sky, while their waters sustain the life around them. Similarly, Duì signifies the joy that arises from openness, shared experiences, and honest communication.

Duì emphasizes the importance of open communication and heartfelt expression, fostering relationships rooted in trust and empathy. It often suggests a need for openness, honest dialogue, or celebration. It advises embracing joy without losing focus, allowing laughter and positivity to guide decisions.

By embodying the wisdom of Duì, we can nurture harmony, build meaningful connections, and find fulfillment in the shared joys of life, much like a serene lake reflecting the beauty of the sky.
