Course overview
坎 (Kǎn), one of the eight primary trigrams in the Yi Jing (I Ching), represents water, depth, and the journey through uncertainty. Its structure—an unbroken yang line enclosed by two broken yin lines (☵)—symbolizes hidden strength surrounded by challenges.

It also reflects the depth of the subconscious, urging introspection and emotional exploration to uncover hidden truths.

Kǎn embodies the qualities of water: adaptability, resilience, and the ability to flow through and around obstacles.
In addition to Dao talks, scriptural work, mystical study (玄学 xuan xue) and meditation, this year’s monthly Daoist training will focus on the Book of Changes (一经 Yi Jing).

The Yi Jing, or Book of Changes, is a revered Chinese divination text that offers wisdom bridging spiritual, philosophical, and practical realms through its eight symbolic trigrams. By exploring the teachings of the Yi Jing, seekers can harness ancient wisdom for personal growth, decision-making, and spiritual enrichment.

☵ 坎 (Kǎn): The Depths of Water

坎 (Kǎn), one of the eight primary trigrams in the Yi Jing (I Ching), represents water, depth, and the challenges of navigating through uncertainty.

The structure of Kǎn—a strong yang line within yielding yin lines (☵)—reflects hidden strength and inner resolve. The unbroken line at the center signifies resilience and courage, while the broken lines on the outside represent the challenges and uncertainties surrounding it. This imagery underscores the importance of maintaining inner strength while adapting to external circumstances.

Kǎn teaches that challenges are opportunities for growth. Like water seeking its path, individuals must remain flexible and resilient, navigating uncertainty with courage. It also reflects the depth of the subconscious, urging introspection and emotional exploration to uncover hidden truths.

In everyday life, Kǎn reminds us to approach challenges with patience and flexibility. Whether facing personal struggles or external obstacles, its wisdom encourages perseverance and introspection.

By embodying the qualities of water—flowing, yielding, yet persistent—we can navigate life’s uncertainties with grace and strength.
