In addition to the Dao talks, as time allows we will practice scriptural work and meditation, this year’s monthly Daoist training will focus on the Daoist Immortals.

Primordial Sovereign Mother of the Dipper

Dǒumǔ Yuánjūn (斗母元君), the Mother of the Great Dipper, is one of the most revered goddesses in Daoism, embodying cosmic creation, celestial protection, and the luminous compassion of the Dao in maternal form.

Her name literally means “Primordial Sovereign Mother of the Dipper,” and in Daoist cosmology she is regarded as the mother of the Nine Luminaries, including the seven visible stars of the Big Dipper and two hidden stars that govern destiny and longevity. As such, she presides over time, fate, purification, and the harmonizing of celestial forces, making her a central deity in both ritual Daoism and inner alchemy.

Ritually, Dǒumǔ Yuánjūn is invoked for health, longevity, destiny purification, and karmic cleansing. The well-known Doumu Jing (Scripture of the Dipper Mother) describes her as the source of yuan qi, the primordial energy that shapes life patterns. Through rites of repentance, star-stepping rituals, and recitation of her sacred names, practitioners seek alignment with her purifying light, which is believed to dissolve karmic obstructions and restore harmony to body, mind, and fate.

In internal cultivation, Dǒumǔ  represents the inner cosmic womb, the point of origin within the practitioner where spirit and vitality are reborn. Meditative practices visualize her radiant presence at the center of the Dipper, circulating protective light through the body’s channels.

Ultimately, Dǒumǔ Yuánjūn embodies the Dao’s most compassionate dimension—guiding practitioners back to clarity, balance, and the deep maternal stillness at the heart of the cosmos.
